Medical waste in Baltimore: a discussion with Raychel Gadson at the University of Maryland
Body
How can more healthcare workers be brought into critical conversations about medical waste and its impacts on communities?
After the Single Use researcher Raychel Gadson took part in an informal discussion organised by a medical student at the University of Maryland. The event brought students together to learn about the impacts of medical waste and the medical waste incinerator on the city of Baltimore.
Raychel introduced the After the Single Use project and shared the organising work she has been collaborating on with the South Baltimore Community Land Trust and a group of students and trainees. This work brings questions about healthcare’s waste practices into conversation with the experiences and concerns of communities affected by them.
Both the ongoing organising and this discussion aim to bring more healthcare workers into a critical conversation about medical waste, building connections between healthcare students, trainees and community organising in Baltimore.
